Take A Break

The holidays are over, the mess is immeasurable, and the laundry is overflowing; it’s time to take a staycation.  If you’ve never heard of this term you are missing out on one of the greatest trends of saving money, time, and your sanity.  Remember that your staycation doesn’t include errands, trips to the grocery store, or any other distractions from relaxing.  Make a list of activities for each day of your staycation this will help you to actually take a vacation instead of just oversleeping on errand days.   Here are some suggestions for your very own special staycation.

1.  Café a la Home.  Instead of drinking your regular cup of joe try out some new coffee recipes.  Check out this link for more coffee recipes:

What are we trying?

Peppermint Chocolate Coffee- My favorite flavors during the winter have always been a cool peppermint and a rich chocolate so, why haven’t I put them in my coffee before?

Hot Apple Coffee- Being a Michigan gal I can’t resist those apples especially when they’re in cider form.  But, an apple coffee?  Tickle me intrigued.
Easy Mocha Iced Coffee- If you’re like me then you are completely guilty of running multiple times to the drive thru for a cool coffee fix.  Maybe if I can make my own then I will stop the crazy drive thru runs forever! (…or until I run out of ingredients…)

2. If you decide that a staycation means and indoor events then you’re going to need some styling p.j.’s to lounge around.  Make sure they are comfy and altogether fabulous.

What are our favorite lounge outfits?

Christian Dior Housecoat- Who says you can’t wear a high end housecoat and NOT be fabulous?  Satiny soft quilted jacket with great pockets for holding your snacks makes this the ultimate loungewear.

60’s Pajama Sweater- Update your favorite jim jams to your new lounge wear for the day in this cute vintage pajama sweater.  You’ll be cozy and adorable all day long.

60’s Cheongsam Robe- Channel your inner starlet with this silky cheongsam robe.  You can throw it over your pajamas or just wear it over your awesome sweat pants and high school tee.

3. Spoil yourself for a day with a spa day.  Either give yourself one at home or go to your local salon.  Whether you stay in or go out you won’t regret this activity.

What are our favorite home spa treatments?

Pedicure-   Just because it’s the winter doesn’t mean I have to let my little tootsies go.  This site gave me some inspiration and it includes stuff that I already have in my kitchen! Yay!

Facials- Being on a tight budget makes going to the spa difficult, but, the internet offers a plethora of possibility.  Personally, I think that when it comes to spas the more natural the better and this site offers some natural solutions for common problems.

Bubble Bath- True as an adult a bubble bath is more about relaxing than about fun…but, I’m still a kid at heart so I love the idea of bubble bath toy.  I’m going to have to try this mini bubble blower out next time I get time for a bubble bath.

4. Take a journey back to your childhood with an old school fort!  Make sure to decorate your fort and spend lots of time hiding inside.

What are our favorite fort decorations?

Christmas Lights- Don’t put those strings of lights away just yet!  String them along the inside of your fort for a fun lit affect that makes you feel like you’re under the stars outside.

Star/Snowflake Cut Outs- Tape those star/snowflake cut outs to pieces of string and tie them to the top of your fort for some added pizzaz!

Pillows- Stuff your fort with all the pillows in your house for a comfy nap.  Or use them as your weapon in case someone tries to invade your fort.
5. Take a day to explore your local library for some good reads.  Check out some new bestsellers or read your favorite classics.  You can even read up on new magazines without a subscription!

What are we reading?

Life of Pi by Yan Martel- “After the sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen-year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan—and a 450-pound royal bengal tiger.” Amazon.com

Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling-“When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?” Amazon.com

Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen-“Americans have lost touch with their history, and in Lies My Teacher Told Me Professor James Loewen shows why. After surveying eighteen leading high school American history texts, he has concluded that not one does a decent job of making history interesting or memorable. Marred by an embarrassing combination of blind patriotism, mindless optimism, sheer misinformation, and outright lies, these books omit almost all the ambiguity, passion, conflict, and drama from our past.” Amazon.com
6. Take a day to tour your local museums.  Park your car for the day and take a walking tour of the whole museum.  Bring your camera for some fun photo opportunities!

What are our favorite museums?

Art Museums- Whether you are into modern art, late renaissance, or photography your local art museums is a great way to acquaint yourself with new pieces.

Aquariums- Take a tropical retreat to a local aquarium and make faces at the fishes.  Watch some of their education presentations and then play around in their kids’ area.  You’re never too old for coloring!

Natural History Museum- Meet some new ancestors at the museum and make sure to take a family photo with them.

7. Check out your local theater to see what show is being performed.  This is a great thing to do either by yourself or with a friend.  Go and see a show you’ve never seen before or see an old favorite.  Make sure to get all dressed up and fabulous.

What are our favorite theater outfits?

Sequined 70’s Evening Dress- If I want to shimmy and shake my way up onto the stage and sing with them I will.  Otherwise, I like to look simply fabulous while watching a show.  Who says the audience can’t be sequined?

60’s Mini Dress- I like being comfy while I’m watching a show.  With a bit of minimalist jewelry and great shoes a mini dress does the trick.

50’s Mink Stole- I imagine myself going to the theater back in the day with a little fur stole.  This accessory turns any of my favorite evening outfits into something timeless and chic.  Plus, I get to be warm when they turn the air conditioning on to Antarctica.
8. Splurge an evening out at that new fancy restaurant.  Or find a restaurant that serves food you’ve never tried before.  Ask around for tips on where you should go.

What is our favorite off beat dishes?

Japanese Hibachi- This fun styled type of restaurant means you get a dinner and a show.  A chef comes out and prepares all your food in front of you.  It’s fun and delicious, definitely a 5 star experience.

Middle Eastern- If you have a sweet spot for spices then you’ll love a restaurant that serves Middle Eastern food.  Ask your waiter/ess what’s good on the menu or ask for a better description of what you thought you might get any way.  This way you’ll be prepared for your culinary delight.

Spanish- Do not confuse this kind of restaurant with Mexican.  A restaurant featuring Spanish fare will take your taste buds on a rich journey of both sweet and spicy.

9. Get ready for spring by making some fun crafts on your stay-cation.  Pick something simple and fun that you can add to your décor to commemorate your relaxing time off.
What are our favorite spring crafts?

Door Wreaths- Cute and a practical decoration for spring that you can customize and make any way you want.  Check out this link for inspiration and instructions.

Infinity Scarf- Fun and a cute way to update your wardrobe for the coming season.  Use up that cute material you have laying around, or go out and find something new.  Check out the link for some instructions.

Pillows- If you are a sewing savvy gal then updating your home décor for the spring may be something fun and relatively quick.  When I saw this felt petal pillow I know what I’m going to be doing on my staycation.
10. Have a lazy day and watch your favorite movie marathon.  You can add a theme to your movie marathon or just select all your favorites and spend a day on the couch enjoying them.

What are our favorite movie marathons?

Musicals- I love watching old musicals and singing along with all the songs.  My favorites include: Kiss Me, Kate; Oklahoma; and West Side Story.

Bollywood- The colors, the fast talking, the random dancing makes Bollywood one of my favorite movie marathons.  I can get up and dance around to the movie or sit and get completely engrossed in the complex plots and reading the captions at lightning speed.  Some of my favorites include: Devdas, Hum dil de chuke Sanaam, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Action Movies- This adrenaline pumping marathon makes me feel like I’ve run a marathon.  Watching as the hero races against time to save the day is the best feeling in the world!  My favorites include: Enemy of the State, Ocean’s Eleven, and Mission Impossible.

Whatever you decide to do for your staycation we bet it will be a wonderful time.  If you’ve taken one before and have done something different leave a suggestion for the other staycationers.
