Chicago Looks

I really love reading street style blogs.  Here in Kalamazoo we aren't very pedestrian, so it makes it hard to get out there and pay attention to what people are wearing.  Reading street style blogs allows me to find out whats actually transitioning from the runway to everday wardrobes OR in many cases, what new trends are going to start showing up on the runway.

A new blog I recently found, and fell in love with, is "Chicago Looks:  Chicago Street Style".

Check out some of the amazing style shown on their website:

Seriously vintage inspired!!!  I love it!!!

Anyway, if you're looking for inspiration, Chicago Looks has a lot of it.

Dresscue Me!!!

dresscue me

Tonight is the premier of the new series "Dresscue Me" on Planet Green.  The show airs at 10:30pm (check local listings depending on your time zone).

This show follows designer and fashonista Shareen Michaels as she balances her vintage clothing business and her life.  Shareen is famous for re-purposing vintage clothing to make one-of-a-kind, fashion forward clothing, that is custom chosen for each customer.

She is in partnership with Goodwill International and the Donate Movement.  It should be a really interesting series, and we are all excited to see what creations come out of it!

Why measure it flat?

Recently I have been asked the question, "Why do you measure your garments laid flat?"

There are three reasons that I measure that way:
1.  I find that I personally take more accurate measurements this way.
2.  Taking flat measurements allows the customer to compare directly to their own clothing without the need of a dress form.  I also use common points of reference that make sense to people that may not have sewing experience.  This also helps with acheiving accurate fit as there is less error.
3.  Most Etsy Vintage sellers measure this way, and it is familiar to the Etsy customer.

Why take meaurements at all you ask?  Why not just label the size?

1.  Standardized sizes have changed dramatically over the decades, and the size on the label may be quite different from that same size by today's standards.
2.  Also, many vintage clothing pieces were custom tailored to their original owner, and were never a standard size.

I hope that sheds a little light on the situation!!!

1970s Etsy Shop Update

Since the 1970s seem to be so hot in fashion right now, I thought it would be fun to put together a 1970s shop update.  Here is what I came up with:

All of these beauties and more can now be found in the shop!

The 70s are Back!

One of the hottest spring and summer fashion trends of 2011 has been 1970s glamour.  High waisted wide leg trousers, flowing maxi dresses, and floppy sun hats are catching our attention this spring.  This is not only because they are in sharp contrast to the leggings and skinny jeans that have been on trend for the past few years, but because they are things that we can often find in our mothers closets.
Here are some of the major looks hitting the runway right now:
Wide leg, high waisted trousers:

Stella McCartney Spring 2011                  Derek Lam RTW Spring 2011                             Akis Spring 2011

These trousers are skin tight at the top, and more than comfortably loose on the bottom.  This allows the natural waist (smallest part of the body hint hint) to maintain definition, while allowing the flared bottoms to balance the shoulders.  Can anyone say flattering?
Jumpsuits:
I really only have one thing to say:  1 piece of clothing=1 outfit.  Score!

Max Mara RTW Spring 2011                                                   Elie Saab Summer 2011                                                Michalski Spring 2011

Maxi Dresses:
We fashionistas are no strangers to the maxi dress.  It has appeared time and again in summer wardrobes over the past few years.  This year’s maxis are different however.  They are not just cute cotton bathing suit cover ups.  They are embellished, they have bold bright prints, they are GLAMOUROUS.  Check it out.

Derek Lam SS 2011                                                       Emilio Pucci Spring 2011                                         Anthropologie Summer 2011

Other 70s trends to consider:
Floppy Sun hats
Hoop Earrings
Wedges
Peasant dresses
A-line and Circle skirts

Well now that you can see how prominent the 1970s have become in todays fashion, maybe you’ll think twice about throwing out your old flares.  OR, if you are in need of a wardrobe update, check out our shop (link).
