Halloween In Vintage

Halloween is the one time of the year that we get to be any character we want.  When thinking of your most ideal outfit this year, consider the possibilities of incorporating vintage as a creative and unexpected twist for Halloween 2012.

CONSIDERING COSTUMES
Before taking on different vintage options, here are a few aspects of the costume decision process that can fuel your search for the perfect costume idea.  Ask yourself:
  • ·         Do I want to be scary? One might wonder if this is an obvious question, but over the years the end result of Halloween costumes usually aren’t scary.  Concept: being Nikki Minaj versus dressing as a zombie.
  • ·         Do I want a creative idea? Includes thoughts that are out of the ordinary.  It could be a clever pun or an uncommon character.  Concept: being Mary Poppins versus being a police officer.
  • ·       Do I want it to look creative?  How much time and energy do you want to put into the costume.  Concept: Sewing patches on a scarecrow versus ordering a costume online.
Note: There is no right or wrong answers!

    LOOKING FOR VINTAGE
Deciding on the parameters of what it is you are looking for will help you focus on the types of items that you will need. Still can’t decide? One of the cool things about shopping with Treasure Chest is how easy it is to find inspiration.   The most stress-free way to look for a costume is to visit the vintage Etsy website without any preconceived notion of what you already want to do.

When scrolling through the site, you will find garments that have endless possibilities:

1950s Prom dress: Pamela Lillian Isley, or “Poison Ivy,” the infamous villain of Batman himself.

How? Green makeup with some leaves in the hair would do the character complete justice.

1960s Evening gown: Joan Harris herself, fromthe show Mad Men, would wear this gown at a highlighted fundraiser event.

How? Perfect with a cascading up-do and red lipstick.

    MAKING DECISIONS
The items found through Treasure Chest are one-of-a-kind.  Everyone knows that the most celebrated looks of the night are the ones that are the most creative!
When everyone is wearing copies of polyester costumes bought from the local Halloween store, it is easy to see the creative advantage that vintage pieces have.  The statement fur coat for one Halloween you’re buying will be worth the investment when you’re also wearing it throughout the next winter months.
Whether it’s an old fedora or a whole new dress, the pieces that you incorporate should mean something to you.  The character you are creating is an investment of time and energy!

There isn’t any other holiday like Halloween. Search for a costume that allows you to be most creative and remember to have the most fun!
